Hi, I’m Andy Watts, founder of The Bench UK.

As a paramedic, I’ve faced countless life-threatening emergencies, each leaving its own lasting impact. Over time, I developed coping mechanisms to process trauma and maintain my mental well-being.

But nothing could have prepared me for the unprecedented challenges we faced during the Covid-19 pandemic. During my time with the NHS, I witnessed firsthand the immense toll the pandemic took on both physical and mental health. At times, I felt emotionally drained, and my usual coping mechanisms were pushed to their limits. I feared that the impact of Covid-19 would leave lasting emotional scars on many, especially with the lack of time and resources to develop healthy coping strategies. The added pressure of lockdowns only intensified this crisis, as social isolation became an even greater threat to our well-being. That’s why I teamed up with Sarah, Stuart, Russ, and Rachel to create The Bench UK. Our mission is simple: to challenge loneliness, foster open and healthy conversations, and support people across the UK in taking small but meaningful steps toward recovery. Through our work, we aim to provide a safe space where people can connect, share their experiences, and access the support they need. Recovery doesn’t have to be a solo journey—it begins with talking, listening, and taking those first steps together. Best wishes,

Left: Andy, 2010.

ABOUT US

Beyond the Siren is our project dedicated to supporting families who have lost a paramedic to suicide.

Paramedics face unimaginable situations in the line of duty, and the trauma they experience can often have profound, lasting effects. This project provides a space for families to heal, connect, and find support as they navigate the unique challenges of such a heartbreaking loss. The ways we can help range from offering advice and emotional support to providing practical resources and guidance. Everyone’s needs are unique during this difficult time, so please don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss the support that would be most helpful for you. We treat all correspondence with the strictest confidentiality. While we may share stories of the support we've provided, we will always do so in a way that protects identities and maintains privacy. For more information, please contact us.

Teamwork

As I talked to people about the concept of The Bench UK, I received an overwhelming amount of support.

Friends, family, colleagues and even strangers have been instrumental its development.

Amazingly it has been the very concept of encouraging conversation, that made The Bench UK possible.

There are many people I can not thank by name, some were the passers-by. Hopefully they will read this one day and know who they are.  Andy.

A special thanks to: Stuart. Mike. Neil. Steve. Rachel. Tim & Cheony.
